When people picture Orlando, they picture theme parks — and fair enough, we’re 15 minutes from Walt Disney World. But after a few days of lines and lanyards, the best thing you can do for your family is step outside the gates. Central Florida has a slower, sunnier side, and it’s worth carving out at least one day for it during your stay.
Start with something wild: Gatorland, just down the road, gives you real Florida swamp, alligators sunning on the boardwalk, and a lot less waiting around than the mega-parks. If your crew prefers water over reptiles, Lake Louisa State Park is quiet, green, and perfect for a morning of kayaking or a bike ride along the paved trails — no tickets, no crowds, just Florida the way it looked before 1971.
Hungry? Skip the park food court and head to 4 Rivers Smokehouse for proper Central Florida barbecue — order at the counter, grab a picnic table, and don’t skip the banana pudding. For an evening out once the kids are settled, Old Town Kissimmee lights up after dark with classic car cruise-ins and an old-school strip of rides and arcades that feels like a step back in time.
The truth is, Orlando is bigger than its parks, and staying in one of our pool homes means you’ve already got the perfect home base for exploring it. You’re close enough to Disney to be back for fireworks, but far enough to feel like a local for the afternoon.
Planning your trip? Check availability at one of our pool homes and start building a stay that’s more than just a park itinerary.
